What is DBT?
DBT Stands for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. It is a type of therapy that helps people accept them selves while challenging them to grow into a better version of themselves. I like to describe “dialectical” in therapy as the time when clients feel like they are at war with themselves or at a cross road. DBT sheds light on the road so far so people are able to figure out what they can do to correct their path and move forward.
What will it be like?
DBT can be done in a structured format where we set goals and topics for each session or a self paced format. Clients that don’t know where to begin or know that they need firm accountability often opt for the structured format. Clients that desire take their time or clients that have experienced trauma often need more flexibility with DBT. You are also able to switch gears or build a hybrid format. Book an initial appointment and will build a plan that is best for you!
Will it work for me?
DBT works best for those who need a change but know they it’ll only work if they are in the driver seat. In my work I have found that children labeled with Oppositional Diffidence Disorder or ODD have the greatest power for change. It often doesn’t feel that way in the mist of conflict or turmoil, however, their strong will and defiance against the way things are prove to be essential tools in DBT. Those also struggling with self harm or those who feel helpless but are looking to regain control of their lives also find DBT to be one of the greatest tools for their therapeutic journey.
What if it doesn’t work?
Part of the work we will do together will be to learn how to listen and trust your self despite your anxiety or past experiences. If you begin to feel like DBT isn’t working for you, our job together is to identify what kind of support empowers you so that you have a secure sense of self rather than silence your feelings of doubt. This will require us to retrace our steps or explore different paths to figure it out at times. You can count on having the support in our therapy sessions to do so when needed.
